Transport Select Committee and HS2 - Report Published on 23 January 2012

The Transport Select Committee has published the Government's repsonse to the Committee's High Speed Rail report.

The Transport Select Committee issued its report, High Speed Rail, on 8 November, 2011, making a total of 23 recommendations. The Government's reponses are set out in the report.

The Government declined to respond directly to the conclusions made by the Committee in paragraphs -

20 - the absence of a transport strategy - the Committee was disappointed that the Government rejected its earlier recommendation to publish a White Paper on transport and the economy;

43 - it was the Committee's view that demand management a largely tactical approach and not a long-term solution to serious mismatches of supply and demand;

89 - the Committee urged the Government to desist from disparaging opponents to HS2 as NIMBYs and for both sides in the debate to show respect for each other and to focus on the facts;

117 - the Committee questioned whether the system is being designed with sufficient margin for expansion.
